Rangers transfer news: Nathan Patterson return twist revealed
Everton defender and reported Rangers target Nathan Patterson is open to moving in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Record.
The news outlet reported on 3 January following on from Liverpool Echo’s claims that the Toffees are unlikely to sanction his departure even though he wants to ramp up game time and return to the Scotland national team fold.
The right-back moved to Goodison Park from Gers on an initial £12million deal in January 2022 [Sky Sports], but has not been a first-team regular at the club.
Rangers must persuade Everton to let Nathan Patterson leave in January
Gers are likely contemplating re-signing Patterson due to their current right-back situation, where James Tavernier’s defensive shortcomings have become more pronounced.
Tavernier, known for his offensive contributions, has often been criticised for his defensive lapses, making him a liability in crucial matches.
Patterson, who has experience and familiarity with the Ibrox outfit from his time before moving to Everton, could provide a more solid defensive option.
His potential return would be timely, as Rangers face a defensive crisis.
Dujon Sterling, who has been filling in at right-back, has been shifted to centre-back due to injuries and suspensions, severely limiting the team’s options in that position.

If reintegrated into a system that suits his playing style, Patterson could not only start ahead of Tavernier but also bring a balance of attacking flair and defensive reliability.
