Rangers miss out on £4m payment in major Philippe Clement blow
Rangers and their inability to sell players properly continue as they look set to miss out on a £4million payment.
Selling players and getting decent value for them appear to be the Light Blues’ Achilles heel off the pitch.
It was an egg-on-the-face moment when James Taylor confirmed that the Glasgow giants bagged just £810,000 from the transfer of Todd Cantwell, Sam Lammers and Connor Goldson in the summer during last month’s AGM.
Rangers are determined to avoid such mistakes in the future, but a £4m blunder may already be on their way.
Rangers to miss out on £4m Jose Cifuentes transfer windfall
Aris Saloniki have abandoned talks to make Jose Cifuentes’ season-long loan deal from Ibrox permanent, according to reports from Greece, as per Rangers Review (3 January).
The Greek club included an option to buy Cifuentes for £4m when they signed him on loan from Rangers in the summer and held talks over lowering the sum in November.
However, they have ditched plans to sign the Ecuador international permanently after they sacked Akis Mantzios and brought in Marinos Ouzounidis, who seemingly does not rate him as highly.
That means Cifuentes will return to Govan when his loan contract expires in June, meaning the Light Blues have thrown Marinos £4m – a sum that Philippe Clement could have used to strengthen his squad – down the drain.

Having sent Cifuentes out on loan to Cruzeiro earlier this year, it was evident that the midfielder does not feature in Rangers’ long-term plans.
It is, therefore, baffling why the Gers allowed Aris to sign him on loan without including a buy obligation in the agreement.
The Premiership outfit now face having to find new suitors for the 25-year-old, who may no longer command anywhere near £4m.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have already signed off a “terrific” deal at Ibrox this month.
