Rangers frustration emerges after Celtic victory at Ibrox

Barry Ferguson is frustrated by Rangers after the manner in which they beat Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox on Thursday.

The ex-Gers midfielder can’t fathom the results in the previous two fixtures before the Old Firm derby win.

St Mirren and Motherwell took points away from the Bears before Philippe Clement got his first victory over the Hoops on Thursday (2 January).

Ferguson wrote in his Daily Record column (4 January): “So the overriding emotion right now is one of frustration. I still can’t believe they managed to leave five points behind against St Mirren and Motherwell at a time in the season when there was so much to play for.

“I honestly don’t know where those two performances came from because, up until that point, they had been building up a head of steam both domestically and in Europe.”

Rangers inconsistency a reflection on Philippe Clement

The Glaswegian outfit have had a topsy-turvy season that has been marred by off-field instability.

At the start of the campaign, the Light Blues lost James Bisgrove and John Bennette from their boardroom.

It took the Gers until December to appoint a new chief executive officer and a permanent chairman.

Patrick Stewart and Fraser Thornton’s arrivals at Rangers has finally got some semblance to the structure at Ibrox, and the performance on the pitch against Celtic finally showed what the Gers are all about.

Clement managed to get some impressive results at the start of December against Tottenham in the Europa League and Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup final, even if the latter did ultimately end in defeat.

The Bears seemed to have turned the tide in the season, but the displays in Paisley and Fir Park were far from convincing.

Failure to win against Brendan Rodgers’ team would surely have meant the end of the Belgian manager’s tenure at the Light Blues.

While the Ibrox crowd will cherish the derby win, they’ll want to see the team do the same against Manchester United on 23 January and, hopefully, lift the Scottish Cup at the end of the campaign.

In other Rangers news, money from Cyriel Dessers’ transfer could be used to reinvest in January.
