Philippe Clement makes plea to Rangers chief live on Sky Sports News

Phillipe Clement seems to have hinted to the Rangers chiefs about the transfers he’s looking for in January.

The Belgian manager won his first Old Firm derby after seven fixtures as the Light Blues beat Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox on Thursday (2 January).

With the victory, the 50-year-old head coach has certainly eased the pressure on himself and will likely be the man in charge for the foreseeable future.

The Bears are still 11 points behind Celtic, and it doesn’t look like a title charge is realistic, but they are still alive in other competitions.

If the stars align at the Glaswegian outfit, Clement can still do wonders in the Europa League and win the Scottish Cup.

Philippe Clement needs reinforcements at Rangers in January transfer window

The Belgian manager is being realistic about the Gers’ prospects despite the emphatic victory over Celtic.

Speaking on Sky Sports News [3 January, 2:36pm] Gordon Duncan asked the 50-year-old whether the victory at Ibrox would be a springboard for the remainder of the campaign, and the head coach responded: “No. Conclusions like that are for after a season.

“We have a big job in our hands to get more consistency with this squad, with the players needing to do this every three days. It’s impossible with this number of games to play at this level, so we need some depth to the squad also.”

Rangers got the better of the Bhoys with a makeshift backline, with John Souttar and Leon Balogun out injured.

Dujon Sterling and Robin Propper were given the responsibility to keep Brendan Rodgers’ attack out and did so impressively.

James Tavernier and Jack Butland were also missing from the starting lineup.

The Light Blues have shown inconsistency this term, though, and Nils Koppen needs to make changes to the squad in January.

Adding reinforcements at the back should certainly be one of the Bears’ priorities, and Clement has himself now admitted he needs more depth to end the campaign on a high note.

It is therefore over to Gers transfer chief Koppen to get at least a couple new faces through the door.
