Sky Sports questioned over Rangers v Celtic social media post

Alistair Bain has questioned Sky Sports over a controversial social media post that emerged before Rangers beat Celtic 3-0 on Thursday.

Philippe Clement eased the ever-growing pressure on his future at Ibrox with a momentum-boosting Old Firm victory (2 January) as Ianis Hagi, Robin Propper and Danilo completed the rout.

However, Bain, head coach at USA outfit Seacoast United Phantoms, reacted to a Sky Sports post on X (2 January) and couldn’t believe the national broadcaster included orange and four leaf clover emojis.

He said, alongside a shrugging shoulder emoji: “Just the official sky account using an orange and a four leaf clover.”

Rangers get revenge over Celtic after Scottish League Cup final controversy

For those unaware, the emojis used by Sky Sports are about the religious divide between the sides in Glasgow.

The Gers sport orange as a symbol for The Orange Order, an old Protestant society, whereas Celtic are tied to the four-leaf clover due to the club’s rich Irish and Catholic heritage.

While Sky Sports may have rocked the boat with the symbolism, in retrospect, it will matter little to the Rangers, who have just avenged the final loss of the Scottish League Cup to Celtic.

Vaclav Cerny was denied a penalty kick in the dying embers of extra-time at Hampden Park on 15 December, with Scottish FA chief Willie Collum admitting fault on behalf of the SFA for the “unacceptable decision.”

And while the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership between the sides has been cut to a staggering 11 points, the result at Ibrox will have massive ramifications for Clement and the Light Blues.

History shows how such a significant result can transform a season, and with Rangers recently dropping points against Motherwell and St Mirren, the perfect performance arrived at the ideal time.

Brendan Rodgers’ men offered little to no attacking threat as the hosts dominated the contest, and if the Gers continue in this manner until the end of the season, there may still be some hope at Ibrox.
