Rangers v Celtic controversy: Tom English explodes at ‘Disgusting’ incident

Tom English has exploded after a Rangers fan threw an object at Celtic midfielder Arne Engels at Ibrox on Thursday.

The Bears cruised to a 3-0 victory on 2 January, but the game was slightly overshadowed by the stupid actions of a fan in the dying moments of the win.

Ianis Hagi, Robin Propper and Danilo got the goals to seal Philippe Clement’s first Old Firm victory, but repercussions could follow soon after.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound (2 January, 17:24) English could not believe what he was watching as the game was coming to an end at Ibrox.

“Absolutely disgusting,” he said.

“What level of idiocy are we dealing with here? When you’re team is putting in a big performance and winning 3-0 and your thought is to throw coins at an opposition player.

“Thuggery.”

Rangers win hit by stupid controversy

This is exactly the reason why away fans will not be allowed back at Old Firm games, despite recent progress on that matter.

Yes, everyone wants that ground-shaking atmosphere, especially in these games but there is a fine line and it was more than just crossed today.

Hagi and Nicolas Raskin were straight into the corner and were left questioning the fans after it happened, and whoever was responsible must be punished immediately when found.

This isn’t the first time that Rangers or Celtic fans have caused trouble this season, with ugly scenes around Glasgow before, during and after the Premier Sports Cup final.

Despite a dominant Old Firm win for the first time in years, it is slightly overshadowed by this incident that will no doubt see the club punished too.

Something needs to change, or it will continue to happen both at Ibrox and Parkhead in the games to come, not only this season but beyond.
