Neil Lennon sums up Celtic v Rangers in one word with instant reaction

Neil Lennon admits the performance Celtic put in during their 3-0 defeat to Rangers on Thursday was “awful”.

Philippe Clement saw his side earn a rather surprising three points after they demolished arch-rivals Celtic in their Scottish Premiership clash on 2 January.

The gap between the Gers and Brendan Rodgers’ men has now been cut down to 11, but there’s still a long way for Clement’s men to go if they wish to be considered as title contenders.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event (2 January, 17:07pm), ex-Celtic boss Lennon shared his thoughts on the performance of the Bhoys.

“People always ask me to predict these games. This is a classic example that you can’t. Rangers thoroughly deserved it – they dominated from more or less start to finish,” he said.

“It’s hard to put your finger on Celtic’s performance – it was so flat. They were second to everything and conceded 24 shots.

“It’s hard to be critical because they’ve been so good over the past year, 18 months, but this was awful”.

Neil Lennon was left shocked by the performance of Rangers

Much like everyone else who was watching the game, whether that be at home or at Ibrox, everyone has been left shocked by the dominance that Rangers showed against their arch-rivals.

Their last few performances have been well below par and there were even talks of Clement being shown the boot if Rangers fell to defeat on Thursday.

Rangers fans will no doubt be jubilant about the performance that their team have put in but this level needs to be carried over to all of their remaining games, no matter the opponent.

For some reason, when Clement’s men are faced with a challenge that most see as impossible for them to get a positive result from, they seem to step things up a gear and earn their manager some extra time at the helm.

If they can replicate Thursday’s performance across the rest of the campaign and some of Celtic’s other results go their way, there could be a genuine chance that the Gers could mount a late title challenge, which, in reality, is an ideal situation for all those involved with the club.
