Chris Sutton slams ridiculous Rangers moment at Ibrox in 3-0 victory v Celtic
Chris Sutton slammed the Rangers supporters after a “ridiculous” incident occurred during the 3-0 win against Celtic.
The BBC Sport and Sky Sports pundit was full of praise for the Gers after Ianis Hagi’s “perfect” opening goal in the demolition of Celtic at Ibrox on Thursday (2 January), but quickly changed his tune before the final whistle.
Neil McCann raged at the home supporters live on Sky Sports Main Event (2 January, 4:55pm) after a coin was thrown at Celtic midfielder Arne Engels, with Sutton providing an instant reaction.
He responded: “Absolutely ridiculous.”
Rangers win riled with controversy v Celtic
The Gers may still have a mountain to climb in the Scottish Premiership to bridge the 11-point gap to Celtic, but it’s always a boost to earn the bragging rights in Glasgow.
Celtic failed to get out of second gear at Ibrox as the hosts ran rampant – Hagi settled the nerves the moment he swept his long-range effort past Kasper Schmeichel after seven minutes.
Robin Propper and Danilo completed the rout, but it was a great showing from every Rangers player on the day, which raises the question of how Philippe Clement managed to drop points against St Mirren and Motherwell.
However, as always the case with the Old Firm derby, controversy is never far away. As Keith Hackett exclusively told Ibrox News, Clement could face action from the SFA for stepping onto the pitch to confront referee Don Robertson in the first half.

Whether it be the supporters, Clement, or stand-in captain Nico Raskin, who received a yellow card for a needless shoving match with Callum McGregor – provoking Clement’s angry reaction – emotions clearly boiled over in Glasgow.
Regardless, there is no taking away the significance of the Old Firm result for Rangers, who can now build on the victory towards a more successful spell in 2025.
