Chris Sutton makes Philippe Clement sack claim as Rangers host Celtic

Chris Sutton believes that Rangers will sack Philippe Clement if Celtic win at Ibrox on Thursday.

Gers play host to their arch rivals in the Old Firm derby on 2 January with the Hoops 14 points clear of Gers.

A win would take the lead to 17 and Sutton believes that the Belgian cannot hide behind the fact that it’s a project at Ibrox.

He told Sky Sports Scotland: “This could be Philippe Clement’s last dance at Rangers manager today if they lose. I suspect it could get ugly in here. They are barely a defender fit. Jack Butland will miss the game. Backs to the wall but they’ve got to come out with a ferocious display and just hope that Celtic aren’t at their best today.

“14 point gap, 17 point gap. It can’t keep being a project. It was important for him to get a trophy in the bag. He didn’t do that so the pressure is building.

“If their team get dispatched today, here on their own patch by their biggest rivals then I suspect it could be curtains.”

Chris Sutton makes a valid point about Philippe Clement’s time at Rangers

Unfortunately, Sutton has hit the nail on the head here.

Gers are in a terrible place and Clement has failed to take this team further.

If anything, they seem to be in a worse position than they were when he joined and that is not something anyone associated with the club wants.

There’s a lot riding on the game against Celtic later today and failure to win that or dominate Brendan Rodgers’ side may just seal the deal for Clement.

With the January transfer window underway it’s important that the club take into account the Belgian’s tenure as manager and decide if he’s worth keeping for the long term.

If not, he cannot be allowed to influence transfer decisions as his track record so far has not been the best either.

It remains to be seen which Gers and which Celtic sides show up later as the Scottish League Cup final was a lot closer than most thought it would be.
