Jack Butland has issued a key update to Rangers supporters following the news of the goalkeeper's admission to hospital.

Butland released a statement on his Instagram story [1 January] to give accurate details of what happened in the previous 24 hours, after news emerged the 31-year-old had spent the night under medical supervision.

The stopper has revealed he suffered a "significant bleed" to his leg which required urgent attention, and for which he is now undergoing a recovery process.

Butland full statement read: "I really appreciate the messages, but it's important the information is correct.

"I've suffered a significant bleed to my leg that needed hospital attention, thankfully that's now under control and will lead to a full recovery hopefully sooner rather than later.

"Needless to say it's come at an awful time and I was fully focused on helping us as a club. The most important thing now is supporting the lads and focusing on getting fit again as soon as possible."

Jack Butland and Rangers suffer crushing blow

As Butland says, the news has come at a horrendous time for he and Rangers, who will now head into the Old Firm derby with Celtic [2 January] without one of their experienced leaders.

However, the bottom line is that in the immediate term, Butland is safe and his recovery is now under control. How long it lasts is so far anyone's guess and Philippe Clement and his team must push on.

Butland has not always performed at his best by his own admission this campaign but it could serve to show what a miss he is during his period on the sidelines.

Liam Kelly is anticipated to come in as the understudy between the sticks and now has a very short window in which to mentally prepare himself to perform to his very best at Ibrox on Thursday.

This could be career-defining for Kelly, and Butland as the ardent professional he has always been will be backing him every step of the way.
