Clement under extra pressure at Rangers as records ready to tumble

Rangers and Philippe Clement’s task is all the more seismic as they look to avoid being on the end of two unwanted records.

The Daily Record shared on 1 January that ahead of the season’s third Old Firm clash and first at Ibrox on 2 January, Celtic and Brendan Rodgers are on the verge of two records against Gers.

Having already overtaken the Light Blues as Scotland’s most successful club by winning their 119th major trophy by winning last month’s League Cup Final, Celtic can claim a record 171st Old Firm victory.

The Glasgow rivals are currently locked level on 170 wins apiece in competitive matches, and another victory for Rodgers would also see the Bears join Aberdeen as the only team he’s beaten 17 times.

Philippe Clement pressure to avoid unwanted Rangers record

Although Clement will be focused solely on the 90 minutes, rather than historical numbers behind this fixture, he can’t hide from his contribution towards them.

Since taking charge at Ibrox, the Belgian’s record against the Light Blues’ biggest rivals makes for grim reading, with zero wins and five defeats from six attempts, one of these coming just 17 days ago.

Although Celtic’s League Cup Final victory came on penalties after a 3-3 draw at Hampden Park, it still goes down in the losses column, with Clement winning just one point from 12 in their league meetings.

Heading into the clash already on the brink of the sack following two dismal results at St. Mirren and Motherwell over the festive period, Clement faces huge pressure to finally claim a first Old Firm win.

Celtic and Rodgers will certainly fired up knowing they have the chance to reassert their dominance in the record books for a second time in 18 days, and the onus is now on Clement to reverse the narrative.

In other Rangers news, the club have agreed another off-field appointment with a four-month wait until they take charge at Ibrox.
