James Tavernier may have played final game for Rangers after admission today

James Tavernier may already have played his final game in a Rangers shirt amid news confirmed by Philippe Clement today.

The Rangers skipper has been regularly linked with a move away from Glasgow [Graeme Bailey] and that is no different ahead of the January transfer window.

Indeed, Tavernier has himself previously admitted he would not be surprised to be the subject of offers from elsewhere ahead of his contract expiring next summer.

And on the basis of what Clement said at his pre-Celtic press conference on Tuesday (31 December), as relayed by the club’s X account, it may well be that his time at Ibrox is already up.

James Tavernier ruled out of Rangers v Celtic

Clement confirmed that Tavernier will miss Thursday’s (2 January) Old Firm clash with Celtic at Ibrox due to injury.

The right-back is expected to miss “a few weeks”, which takes us right up to the final week of the January transfer window.

If the rumours over the past few months are anything to go by, then it seems there will be a fair few suitors out there for Tavernier.

It may well be that he just departs as a free agent next summer, but the Gers will want to recoup some sort of fee for him next month if possible.

That is not to write off this season entirely, with the Scottish Cup and Europa League still competitions for Rangers to attack, but one eye has to be on the 2025-26 campaign.

If a bid comes in for Tavernier of a respectable amount, those high up at Ibrox have to accept that bid and everyone can move forward.

And the sad truth is that if that is the case, Tavernier’s final game in a Gers shirt would have come in the 2-2 draw with Motherwell, which is not the way he would have envisioned bowing out.

In other Rangers news, a Gers player with a goal every 209 minutes this season could be on his way out in January.
