Rangers sack: Ibrox board talks overnight after Philippe Clement job update
Patrick Stewart may have initiated talks over sacking Philippe Clement after Rangers were held to a 2-2 draw by Motherwell on Sunday, according to Scott McDermott.
The Light Blues came from behind to salvage a point at Fir Park on 29 December, but ultimately fell 14 points behind Celtic after dropping two more points.
As the Gers face the prospect of falling 17 points behind when the Hoops visit Ibrox on Thursday (2 January), McDermott believes Stewart and co may be considering sacking the Belgian before that.
“I think after today, the people upstairs at Ibrox, Patrick Stewart, I think it would probably have even crossed their minds tonight to relieve Clement of his duties before the Old Firm game”, McDermott said on Daily Record’s Hotline Live (29 December).
Keith Jackson, meanwhile, sought clarification from his colleague, asking: “You think there’ll be conversations going on tonight whether or not you leave that man [Clement] in position ahead of Thursday?”
McDermott replied: “I think so because at the moment there’s nothing at all to suggest that Rangers will go into that game at Ibrox and win it.”
Patrick Stewart has Philippe Clement decision to make at Rangers
It appears it is only a matter of time before Clement is relieved of his duties at Ibrox.
The former Monaco boss has been under immense pressure in Govan since the start of the season, but has managed to cling onto the job until now.
The absence of a permanent chairman and CEO helped his cause, but with Fraser Thornton and Stewart in place now, he is quickly running out of time.
As things stand, it is hard to see the hierarchy axing Clement before Thursday’s Old Firm derby.
However, that game could be the last nail in the coffin for the 50-year-old.
A loss or even a draw in that game could signal the end of Clement‘s one-year reign over Rangers.
It would not make sense to sack him right now and have an interim manager in charge for the clash at Ibrox.
Therefore, Clement may have one last chance to save his job in Glasgow.
