Philippe Clement blasted for ‘Astounding’ Rangers decision v Motherwell
Philippe Clement made an “astounding” Rangers decision against Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday, David Tanner says.
The talkSPORT broadcaster wasn’t too pleased as the Belgian manager made seven changes to his starting lineup at Fir Park on Sunday (29 December).
Kieran Dowell started with Vaclav Cerny on the bench as the Light Blues dropped points in the 2-2 draw, and the Belgian manager has been accused of making “bad calls” for the fixture.
On his personal X account (29 December), Tanner wrote: “It’s astounding that when Rangers needed a win and without their best player of 2024, John Souttar, Clement was happy to go along with dropping another key man in Cerny.
“Predictably, Cerny’s replacement, Dowell, did what he also does. Not a lot. Bad calls.”
Philippe Clement got it wrong in Rangers draw v Motherwell
Clement’s decision to tweak his team to such an extent clearly backfired as the Light Blues went into the break two goals down.
The 50-year-old head coach might have had reasons to rest his star players ahead of a packed fixture, but he must accept the blame for their poor performance.
Cyriel Dessers was also handed his first start in a while, and Hamza Igamane had to come on after the break to save the Gers’ blushes.
Clement eventually called upon Cerny after an abysmal first half, and the substitutions made a difference for Rangers.
Celtic are now the runaway leaders in the Scottish Premiership, with the Light Blues 14 points behind their Old Firm rivals.
After the recent results, the 50-year-old head coach will once again be under pressure at the Glaswegian outfit.
Brendan Rodgers’ team are up next for the Bears in the league on 2 January, and failure to get victory at Ibrox will surely be the end of the Belgian.
