Neil McCann blasts Dessers on air after ‘enormous’ Rangers moment v Motherwell

Cyriel Dessers was slammed live on air by Neil McCann after he missed a huge goalscoring chance as Rangers drew 2-2 against Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday.

The Nigeria international missed two big chances during the 45 minutes he was on the pitch before being replaced by eventual hero Hamza Igamane at half-time as the Light Blues came from behind to salvage a point on 29 December.

One of those instances saw the striker fail to hit the back of the net from close range after Ridvan Yilmaz put the ball on a plate for him early on in the game, leaving former Gers star and pundit McCann perplexed.

The pundit tipped his hat to Yilmaz for his “beautiful” cross and branded the chance “enormous”, but could not wrap his head around how Dessers approached it.

“What a ball from Yilmaz, it is beautiful”, McCann said on Sky Sports Football Live (29 December, 3:08 pm).

“He’s looking all the way, watch this as he just feeds it in there.

“He [Dessers] has got to get better contact, I’m not sure what he is doing.

“He wins the race, he’s goal-side, he’s ball-side, there’s plenty of time, just get the instep on that.

“He’s trying to get the foot over across it. That’s an enormous chance!”

Cyriel Dessers could seal Philippe Clement fate at Rangers

Dessers’ miss proved costly as Motherwell went on to take the lead through Apostolos Stamatelopoulous minutes later.

The Steelmen doubled their lead through Tawanda Maswanhise in the first half, prompting Philippe Clement to axe the 30-year-old and Kieran Dowell at the start of the second period.

Igamane and Vaclav Cerny came on instead and went on to make an instant impact on the Gers.

The Morocco Under-23s international bagged two goals to help his side come away with a point from Fir Park.

Although the Light Blues avoided defeat, Clement is still under pressure of being sacked by the Glasgow giants.

The result has seen the Ibrox outfit fall 14 points behind table-toppers Celtic, who can extend it by another three points when they lock horns with Clement and co on Thursday, 2 January.

A defeat against the Hoops at home could be the last nail in the coffin for Clement at Rangers.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been accused of playing the victim as the next Ibrox casualty is mooted.
