Motherwell v Rangers controversy: SFA KMI panel reveals VAR mistake

Motherwell can feel hard done by one particular refereeing decision in their 2-2 draw with Rangers on Sunday, according to the Scottish FA’s Key Match Incident panel.

A new document shared by the SFA shows that the five-member panel analysed four decisions in the game at Fir Park on 29 December in their weekly review.

Both the referee Kevin Clancy and VAR were right in two of those instances and the latter rightly intervened in another but failed to do so when needed after Jack Butland’s own goal was disallowed.

Three of the five-member panel agreed that VAR should have recommended an on-field review for the goal after Clancy called for a foul on Butland.

Philippe Clement cannot have any complaints about Motherwell v Rangers controversy

Rangers believe they were hard done by Clancy and VAR after they decided against overturning Apostolos Stamatelopoulos’ opener for a handball.

They also feel Lennon Miller escaped a red card for a rash challenge on Oscar Cortes, for which Clancy only dished out a yellow card.

It is worth noting that the handball decision was unanimously supported by the KMI panel.

Meanwhile, three members thought the on-field decision to book Miller for his foul was correct, although two thought an on-field review would have made sense.

Nevertheless, it appears only Motherwell can be disappointed about the refereeing decisions in Sunday’s game.

Philippe Clement has nowhere to hide after dropping two more points in the title race.

Rangers now find themselves sitting 14 points behind Celtic, who could extend that to 17 points with another win at Ibrox on Thursday, 2 January.

A defeat against the Hoops could be the final nail in the coffin for Clement in Govan.

In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd was surprised by what he saw the Light Blues players do at full-time on Sunday.
