Andy Walker names ‘appalling’ reason Rangers won’t sack Philippe Clement
Andy Walker believes that Philippe Clement will keep his Rangers job due to the “appalling” financial results the Ibrox outfit shared in October.
The Belgian has been under severe scrutiny this season due to the Gers’ underperformance in the league and a 2-2 draw against Motherwell on Sunday (29 December) saw the gap to Celtic was increased to 14 points.
However, former Celtic player Walker – speaking on the Go Radio Football Show in quotes relayed by the Daily Record (30 December) – thinks the fact Rangers posted operating losses of £17million back in October means there is a chance the Gers cannot afford to sack Clement.
“I think the 14-point gap will only grow, but it’s an even bigger call to make to pull that trigger on Philippe Clement. The cost to get rid of his coaching staff, the cost of getting someone else in – I don’t know what money they have to give a new manager, if any,” he said.
“I know we have a January transfer window, do Rangers start changing things around then? It’s a really big call. I have got no allegiance to Rangers I am just trying to play devil’s advocate here.
“You look at the financial results that were released recently, and they were appalling. I think the only way he can survive is winning games – and winning big games”.
Philippe Clement should have been sacked by Rangers a long time ago
Although Rangers have shown moments of class this season, more often than not fans have been let down by their team and their lack of form in the Scottish Premiership.
In most cases, if a manager found themselves 14 points behind their biggest rivals, that would be enough to earn him his marching orders but due to the Gers’ recent financial accounts which outline how much money they’ve actually lost, it’s clear to see why John Gilligan is keen to keep hold of him.

Rangers’ title chase has been long gone for some time now but their recent draw against Motherwell further cemented their place in the Bhoys’ dust.
Of course, the January transfer window is just around the corner and changes could be made to help boost Clement’s chances of chopping away at the gap between themselves and Celtic but realistically, it feels like the Ibrox outfit are ready for a change and a new direction as soon as possible.
