Philippe Clement on brink of Rangers sack after scenes at Fir Park

Philippe Clement is on the brink of being sacked by Rangers after drawing 2-2 against Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported via their website on 29 December that the Belgian is still under pressure at Ibrox despite his team coming from behind to salvage a point against the Steelmen.

Clement has only delayed the “inevitable” with the result against Stuart Kettlewell’s side, with a long-term future in Govan deemed unlikely for the former Monaco boss.

As the Light Blues face the prospect of falling 17 points behind Celtic when they face each other at Ibrox on Thursday (2 January), Patrick Stewart has a decision to make.

Rangers loss v Celtic will seal Philippe Clement stint at Ibrox

For a long time, it has seemed like Clement is clinging on to his job with the Glasgow giants.

The absence of a permanent chairman and a CEO in the early stages of the season helped the Belgian stay on the job despite a string of poor results.

However, he appeared to turn things around recently as the Gers went on a seven-game unbeaten run across all competitions, with the penalty shootout loss against Celtic in the League Cup final the only hiccup during that run.

They reduced the gap with Brendan Rodgers’ side to nine points during that period, but hopes of a massive comeback crumbled after they lost 2-1 against St. Mirren on Boxing Day (Thursday, 26 December).

Sunday’s draw against Motherwell has dealt another blow to Rangers’ hopes of catching up with Celtic, who now boast a 14-point lead at the top of the table.

Clement, therefore, appears to be running out of time at Ibrox and it remains to be seen if the game against the Hoops will be the nail in the coffin for him.
