Ianis Hagi: Rangers player absence v Motherwell explained as Ibrox exit mooted
Philippe Clement has offered an explanation after Ianis Hagi was left out of his Rangers squad to take on Motherwell.
Clement shocked supporters by making seven changes to his side for Sunday’s (29 December) clash in the Scottish Premiership, with Hagi left out of the squad completely.
The attacking player has been linked with a move away from Ibrox ahead of the January transfer window, with a move to Genoa seemingly on the cards [La Gazzetta Dello Sport].
However, his omission from the squad isn’t related to an exit as Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie posted on X [29 December]: “Clement says Hagi is out of the squad due to illness.”
Ianis Hagi left out of Rangers squad
Supporters will no doubt have been shocked at Clement’s team selection for the game against Motherwell as he is still very much in a period of fighting for his future at Ibrox.
The Belgian claims Hagi is out of the squad due to illness, which may be the case and therefore is reassuring for supporters who want to see him stay put.
However, there will also be some worries that the Gers may have seen the 26-year-old play for them for the last time.
Clement also revealed that the likes of Vaclav Cerny, Hamza Igamane and Jefte were kept out of the squad due to tiredness with the manager not wanting to risk any injuries.
Nevertheless, it feels like an awkward selection from the manager as many of his top players have been left to settle for a place on the bench.
Furthermore, with Hagi’s future at the club in doubt, despite the explanation, this seems to further fuel the fire that an exit could be on the cards.
