Clement credibility gone at Rangers as new Ibrox sack claim made

Philippe Clement has lost credibility at Rangers despite not yet facing the sack, says Gary Keown.

The Belgian has come under fire throughout the campaign and was brought back down to Earth after a positive spell with a defeat against St Mirren.

The 50-year-old isn’t rated highly by the Ibrox faithful and it now appears that Keown has reached the end of his patience in his column with the Scottish Mail on Sunday (29 December, page 90).

He said: “What does it say about Rangers that they are 10 months down the line from the wheels coming off the cart under their manager Philippe Clement and still sticking with the Belgian, still accepting dismal performances on a regular basis, still listening to his excuses and still refusing to pull the trigger.

“A calm, considered, forceful voice in his first five months or so in the job. Now a large section of the Light Blue fanbase can no longer face even listening to him.

“From being ‘moral winners’ after scraping a 3-3 Old Firm draw at home to babbling on about shots on goal when you’ve been taken apart 3-0 at Parkhead, the guy’s credibility has gone.”

Philippe Clement credibility questioned in Rangers sack verdict

The former Monaco boss has had ups and downs throughout his spell in charge of the Gers but could now be on the way out.

A recent upturn in form saw the Light Blues pick up superb wins against Nice and Kilmarnock while being unlucky to lose an Old Firm League Cup final.

Ultimately Clement will be assessed against the Scottish Premiership table and silverware which doesn’t reflect well on him right now.

With fans growing impatient and Keown voicing his frustrations against the man in the Ibrox dugout, the end could be near for the manager in Govan.

With a home clash against Celtic coming up on 2 January, the ex-Club Brugge manager could secure his short-term future with a positive result.

Given that the head coach is yet to oversee an Old Firm win, that feels unlikely and a defeat could prove to be a telling blow in the new year.
