Scott Allan blasts ‘shocking’ Jack Butland footage in Rangers loss v St Mirren

Scott Allan blasted Rangers ace Jack Butland for a moment of “absolute madness” when he chose to come darting out of his box and gift St Mirren a penalty in their 2-1 defeat at Paisley.

The goalkeeper mistimed his challenge for the ball after the Saints broke on the counter-attack when one of the Gers’ many forward runs broke down.

The resulting penalty led to Stephen Robinson’s men scoring the opener through Oisin Smyth and had the Ibrox outfit on the back foot from the 30th minute.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene (26 December), ex-Celtic player turned pundit Allan shared his thoughts on the part Butland had to play in the opening goal.

“It’s a shocker, it’s the indecision, shocking, I honestly still can’t make up my mind why he’s done that,” Allan said.

“A moment of absolute madness.”

Jack Butland can’t let these sorts of mistakes become a regular occurrence at Rangers

For most of the season, Butland has been one of the Gers’ star players and has often kept them in games and earned them points.

Although his performance against St Mirren may have just been a bump in the road, with the way things have sometimes gone at Ibrox this season, you can never know what to expect.

Since his arrival in Glasgow last summer, the Englishman has become something of a cult hero at the club despite only being there for a short amount of time.

At the moment, things are starting to look less and less bright for Philippe Clement and his men and their chances of the title are obviously getting slimmer by the day.

Only time will tell if Rangers can pick things back up after their defeat but if they are going to do that, Butland needs to hit the ground running instantly and not let his mistake against the Saints bring him down.
