Logical Butland explanation shared after ‘Panic’ slammed in St Mirren v Rangers
Stephen McGowan has highlighted a lack of sleep as the “only logical explanation” for Jack Butland’s error for the opening goal conceded by Rangers in their defeat to St. Mirren.
Celtic increased their advantage at the top of the table to 12 points as a result of Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to St. Mirren on Boxing Day.
Philippe Clement’s side found themselves 1-0 down on the half-hour mark with Butland – whose partner gave birth to a baby daughter last week – slammed for his involvement in the goal, described as a “ridiculous bit of goalkeeping” with McGowan giving an explanation via the Scottish Daily Mail.
In the print edition of the outlet (27 December, pg70), McGowan explained: “A lack of sleep offered the only logical explanation for the manner in which Butland surrendered the opener.
£Back in goal after missing the 1-0 win over Dundee to attend the birth of his baby daughter, he was guilty of blind panic when he rushed from his line to clatter Greg Kiltie after half an hour.”
Jack Butland may ended any title hopes for Rangers
While their chances of winning the title were already minimal, a now 12-point gap is a horrid sight but it’s impossible to say that it isn’t a deserved one.
Rangers simply haven’t found the level of consistency nor performance required to win the league, whereas Celtic have and Clement will have to carry that burden on his shoulders.
His team selection for the clash immediately put the Gers at a disadvantage with Butland’s howler just increasing the steepness of the uphill battle they already found themselves fighting.

The defeat leaves Rangers with two realistic chances of winning silverware, although one of those being in the Scottish Cup means they will likely have to beat Celtic to achieve it.
Which given they’ve failed to win in the last seven Old Firm derbies, seems unlikely and success in the Europa League would be a gargantuan challenge given the level of quality in the teams remaining.
