Dujon Sterling torn to shreds in Rangers loss v St Mirren – ‘Awful’
Craig Swan ripped into Rangers defender Dujon Sterling for his error in the build-up to Caolan Boyd-Munce’s winning goal for St. Mirren on Boxing Day.
St. Mirren secured a 2-1 win over the Gers on 26 December for the first time since 2011 with any remaining title hopes at Ibrox diminishing.
Philippe Clement made a handful of poor decisions heading into the clash but that can’t be an excuse for the error made by Sterling, which led to the winning goal for the hosts.
Swan, via the print edition of the Daily Record (27 December, pg58), ripped into Sterling for his error, which ultimately cost the Gers the game.
“Another awful blunder left them defeated by Saints in the league for the first time in 13 years,” explained Swan.
“Sterling was mugged in his own half in the closing stages and that led to a winner from sub Caolan Boyd-Munce, which sparked scenes of wild joy in the home stands.”
Dujon Sterling struggles continue for Rangers against St. Mirren
With James Tavernier looking all but set to depart Ibrox in the summer, Sterling has needed to step up and prove he can be the successor but he simply hasn’t shown that he is capable of doing that.
The 25-year-old, who in fairness was in an unfamiliar centre-back role, has struggled for any consistency in his performances and it is a real concern for Rangers that needs to be considered before any decision is made.
If the Gers are to end their title draught, consistency is going to prove key and that is in terms of results but also individual performances and Sterling has showcased his inability to achieve that on far too many occasions.

With how relentless the title race can be in Scotland, any slip-up can be detrimental to your hopes and at the moment, Rangers seem to be skating on ice every single week with an error imminent.
Defeat to St. Mirren means any league success is highly unlikely given the 12-point gap that is present, with the Europa League and Scottish Cup their two remaining opportunities to win silverware.
In other Rangers news, Clement can only have himself to blame if he faces the sack.
