Rangers can of worms could be opened after new Cyriel Dessers reveal
Alan Hutton says a can of worms could be opened at Rangers after it was revealed that Cyriel Dessers wanted to take a penalty in the Scottish League Cup final.
After the striker failed to be one of the five penalty-takers in the defeat against Celtic on Sunday 15 December, he faced plenty of criticism as his side lost the game.
The 30-year-old has found himself falling out of favour under Philippe Clement and there have been suggestions that the manager should have explained his decision over the penalties.
Addressing the incident on the Premier Sports Scottish Football Social Club [23 December, 35:00], Michael Stewart said: “A person was messaging as well and saying it was poor of him not to articulate that it was his decision.
“But very quickly, if the manager was to come out and say look I made the decision, it moves swiftly on to okay so you think that Jack Butland and Yilmaz is a better option than your main number nine striker?”
Hutton responded to that by saying: “You’re opening up a can of worms a wee bit.”
Rangers penalty commission the end for Cyriel Dessers?
It was clear that Dessers was falling down the pecking order at Ibrox although this wasn’t a big surprise as 22-year-old Hamza Igamane started to show really strong form.
However, this situation seems to boil down to more than that with Clement seemingly trusting a goalkeeper to take a penalty-kick before his own number nine.
After the penalty loss in the League Cup final, the striker has been subject to criticism for his failure to step up for a spot-kick and therefore, it does feel strange that the manager failed to address it if it was his decision.

As Hutton says though, this would no doubt open a can of worms as it seems as though there is more to this than a younger in-form striker being favoured over the 30-year-old.
Dessers has been linked with a move away from Ibrox and with the January transfer window approaching, this may be the outcome that benefits all parties in this situation.
