Rangers must pull out all the stops for Darius Olaru transfer with MLS move mooted
Rangers risk missing out on signing Darius Olaru if they don’t pay his release clause after the FCSB captain’s agent suggested a move to the United States.
Speaking to Fanatik (20 December), agent Giovanni Becali said that Olaru leaving FCSB is “possible” in the January window, with the midfielder having a £4.15million release clause with the Romanian side.
Olaru’s impending destination in January is seemingly split between Ibrox or the MLS, putting the onus on Philippe Clement and the Gers’ hierarchy to seal the transfer as quickly as they can.
Becali said: “Olaru remains the same player courted by several clubs. We’ll see if it’s possible in January – £4.15million and he leaves.
“Maybe in America. There’s also the American version – since Trump has become president – we’ll go there too.”

While the Light Blues do have plenty of central midfielders on their books at present, Clement’s squad is still one which needs to go up several notches in quality if they’re to close the gap on Celtic.
Paying a straight £4.15m release clause won’t be easy for a club which has lost £17m in their latest accounts, but doing so to sign Olaru would be a significant statement for the Gers to make.
Clement’s summer overhaul of the squad was done under a sell-to-buy policy for the most part, and despite changes at boardroom level in recent weeks, this looks likely to also be the case in January [Chris Jack, 7 December].
Cyriel Dessers looks the most likely candidate to make way after slipping down the pecking order, but Olaru – having scored 13 goals already this term – is clearly capable of making up the goalscoring deficit.
The likes of Kieran Dowell and Alex Lowry are merely making up the numbers in Clement’s squad, and if he can add a goalscoring midfielder like Olaru to his ranks, the Gers would have one hell of an upgrade.
