James Tavernier was let down by his Rangers teammates in the 1-0 win against Dundee, Kris Boyd says.

The right-back started again for the Gers on Saturday [21 December] in the Scottish Premiership as Tony Docherty's team made their way to Ibrox.

Tavernier played in some brilliant crosses into the box during the match, and Boyd was left frustrated that none of the Light Blues' attackers got on the end of them.

Speaking on Sky Sports [21 December, 15:27], the 41-year-old said: "James Tavernier's fired in some lovely balls - he's begging for somebody to go on the end of them, and there's nobody there."

James Tavernier coming back to best for Rangers

Tavernier has had his critics this season, and rightfully so, putting in some horrible performances initially.

The Light Blues weren't at their best at the start of the campaign, and Philippe Clement subsequently decided to drop the English defender from his starting lineup.

With Dujon Sterling impressing many, the 25-year-old's influence in the team has started to grow and he's become a regular fixture in the backline.

Rangers have had to deal with some injury issues in defence, which has led to Tavernier's inclusion in recent matches.

The 33-year-old started for the Bears in the Premier Sports Cup final against Celtic as Clement's team went toe-to-toe at Hampden Park, and there have been calls to replay the fixture after the VAR controversy.

While the Light Blues lost the Old Firm derby on penalties, the performance was encouraging from every single player on the pitch, including the skipper.

Sterling has had to fill in at centre-back with John Souttar injured, and Tavernier's form has turned at the right time.

While this season has hardly been a vintage one so far - anything but - some consistent form has at least now been found in the league. Long may that continue.
