Chris Sutton reveals condition for Rangers to sack Philippe Clement in 2025

Chris Sutton believes Rangers will sack Philippe Clement if they fail to beat Celtic on 2 January, 2025.

While the former Hoops striker has lauded the Belgian for an improvement in recent weeks, he believes that the last four months are still working against him.

With the Old Firm derby just around the corner, anything other than the three points could see the Ibrox hierarchy deciding to part ways with him, believes Sutton.

He told the Daily Record on 21 December: “Things have picked up in recent weeks under Philippe Clement.

“I thought they were outstanding against Spurs and improved in other games. It’s such a small sample of games though. Have we just to forget about the previous four months?

“Clement has bought breathing space but I still think he’s on his last legs. Failure to beat Celtic at Ibrox at New Year and I can’t see him surviving.

“He was bleating about the Hampden call but it should paper over the issues that remain. It also shouldn’t diminish Celtic’s achievement. Unlike their rivals, they do know how to win.”

Philippe Clement needs to do more to prove he deserves the Rangers job

The recent uptick in form cannot alone justify his tenure when viewed against the backdrop of the lack of substantial progress since he took over.

While Clement has managed to steer Gers to some commendable results and performances recently, the overall narrative of his time at the club has been one of underachievement.

The pressure is particularly intense with the upcoming Old Firm derby against Celtic, where only a win might silence his critics.

The past four months under Clement have been characterised by inconsistency and a failure to close the gap with rivals, suggesting that a few good games do not erase the broader picture of a team that hasn’t advanced as expected.

To secure his position, the Belgian must demonstrate a clear strategy for sustained success, showing not just short-term wins but a pathway to consistent improvement and challenge for titles.

Without this, his position at Ibrox remains precarious and if the gap between Gers and Celtic gets closer to 15 points, he may be sacked.
