Patrick Stewart to address Rangers player trading model, Dessers update damning
Patrick Stewart has plenty of challenges to overcome and many problems to fix after becoming the new Rangers CEO this month.
The Gers announced [25 November] that the 50-year-old would begin his role at Ibrox on 16 December, and since moving into the boardroom, he will have found several things to address.
One of the biggest changes that the passionate fanbase has been calling for is the leader of the first team, Philippe Clement, given his struggling form in the Scottish Premiership.
However, sacking the manager now is unlikely to help close that 11-point gap on Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table, especially given the team’s form in Europe this term.
The major problems start much higher up than on the pitch, and while fans are not privy to the information behind the scenes, it is clear that changes need to be made elsewhere before looking at Clement.
Rangers player trading model must change as new Cyriel Dessers update emerges
Many will argue that one of the biggest reasons for the “gulf” between the Gers and the Hoops is the Light Blues’ awful player trading model, which has only hindered progression in Glasgow.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have been able to splash the cash in each transfer window, spending £11million on Arne Engels [BBC Sport] and £9.5million on Adam Idah [Sky Sport], for example.
However, that was only really possible after the Hoops sold star midfielder Matt O’Riley to Premier League outfit Brighton for £25million [BBC Sport]. That is how business should be done.
Across the pond at Ibrox, Cyriel Dessers is being linked with a January exit, but after joining on a £4.3million deal in the summer of 2023 [Fabrizio Romano], it is unlikely they will recoup that fee [TEAMtalk].
This highlights everything wrong currently with the Gers’ player trading model – being unable to make any profit on a striker who scored 22 goals in his first season in Scotland.

He even has 12 goals in all competitions this term but Clement’s side are unlikely to free up many funds during the January window, even if they find a new destination for Dessers.
It is absolutely ludicrous, which is exactly why Stewart needs to work closely with Nils Koppen and make it his mission to address the player trading model as quickly as possible.
