St. Etienne problem noted in transfer for exit-linked Rangers ace Cyriel Dessers

Scott Burns has shared that the fact that St Etienne don’t have a head coach could end up being a problem in their pursuit of Rangers ace Cyriel Dessers.

Over the last couple of days, the striker has been linked with an Ibrox exit as Ligue 1 side St. Etienne have emerged as a top contender to acquire his services [Le10Sport, 18 December].

The Nigeria international has recently lost his place in the Gers’ first-team squad due to the impressive form of Hamza Igamane and it’s not likely that he’ll earn it back any time soon.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (18 December), Keith Jackson and Burns shared their thoughts on the “big question” that’s currently hanging over the head of the 29-year-old’s future, with the latter also stating that finances could be a problem for the French side.

“Cyriel Dessers is the big question mark,” Jackson said. “If somebody from Ligue 1 comes along with a big bag of Euros for Cyriel Dessers it’ll feel like a visit from Santa Claus for Rangers.

To which Burns replied: “The St. Etienne link has still got quite a bit to go before they decide if they’re going to firm up any interest.

“The problem is that St. Etienne don’t have a head coach and need to get one before they start signing players and they are currently third-bottom of Ligue 1.

“They face a real fight to stay in the top flight and by all accounts I’m not sure if they would have the finances to buy Cyriel Dessers.”

Rangers should find a new home for Cyriel Dessers as soon as possible

Even though Dessers was the club’s top scorer last season and is the leading marksman in all competitions this term, his performances have often left fans rather frustrated.

While his workrate and ability to carve out chances are appreciated, his composure in the final third is sometimes non-existent and leads to the fanbase seemingly demanding that new players be brought into the starting XI.

Evidently, Philippe Clement was also getting fed up with the lack of consistency from the striker because he chose to give summer arrival Igamane and Danilo opportunities to lead the Gers’ frontline.

And, after the performances the Morocco youth international has put in over the last month or so, it could have been a choice that saved his job at Ibrox.

If the Belgian can find a way to offload Dessers in January, he should sanction his exit as any money raised from his sale could go into bolstering the Gers’ ranks and perhaps bolster their chance at making a late run for the title, although, that does seem like a rather optimistic dream at this stage.
