Philippe Clement sack verdict shared amid ‘unsurvivable’ Rangers admission
Michael Grant believes the pressure upon a Rangers manager who isn’t winning trophies is “unsurvivable” which is why they’ve had such a large turnover of staff in recent seasons.
Philippe Clement’s role as the Gers’ boss has been under a microscope plenty of times this season but, recently, his role has felt somewhat safe.
Granted, they did get beaten in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday after Celtic triumphed 5-4 on penalties but the Ibrox outfit’s performances in the build-up to that game were rather impressive.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast (17 December) journalist Grant shared his thoughts on the “stability” that Rangers are trying to build with Clement at the moment as they look to avoid the turnover of staff they’ve had in recent years.
“The weight they’ve put onto the manager in recent seasons and the responsibility he’s shouldered and the problem with that of course is that Rangers are in an environment and they are a club where if they’re not winning trophies, pressure on the manager becomes unsurvivable,” he said.
“That’s why they’ve had this turnover of annual changes and that cascades down through the club and the problems that causes in terms of building a squad that’s under three or four different managers and influencers.
“You’re not getting that stability and coherence, they’re clearly trying to get that with Clement.”
Rangers were right to stick by Philippe Clement this season
As aforementioned, the future of Clement has been brought into question on more than one occasion this season.
There have even been times when journalists have said they expected things to get “toxic” between the Belgian and the Gers’ fanbase due to their poor performances on the pitch.
Indeed, they are still 11 points away from league leaders Celtic and have a massive gap to work away throughout the rest of the season but if things go their way and they continue their solid run of form, things could soon start to look brighter in Glasgow.

Of course, the Gers’ position at the end of the season should be when the Belgian is critiqued as the board will have all the information they need from the games that have been played and the position they’re in.
At the moment, it feels like both parties are in it for the long term but as with everything in football, things can change in an instant.
In other Rangers news, the Gers now have a Premier League midfielder on their radar ahead of the January transfer window.
