Rangers sack noted as ‘Remarkable’ Philippe Clement verdict drops

Rangers failing to win any of their six matches against Celtic under Philippe Clement is “remarkable”, Daniel Caw says.

The Gers lost to the Hoops on penalties in the Premier Sports Cup final on Sunday [15 December], leaving the Daily Record journalist shocked at the Belgian manager’s record.

Caw argued that no manager from either side in the past has survived the sack after failing in that many Old Firm derbies, with Keith Jackson terming it “uncharted territory”.

Speaking on the latest Hotline Live [16 December], Caw said: “Looking at both clubs’ histories, I don’t think there’s any manager for either side that has failed to win in any of the first six derby matches and survived.

“It’s pretty remarkable.”

Rangers struggles v Celtic continued at Hampden Park

While the Gers put in one of their best performances against Celtic under Clement, they failed to get over the line in the penalty shootout.

The Light Blues took a well-deserved lead in the first half after dominating Brendan Rodgers’ team but almost let the game slip away after the break.

With the Hoops taking the lead twice, Danilo came to the rescue for the Bears just before the 90th minute, with the game ending 3-3 in regulation time.

Rangers were unfortunate not to get a penalty for a foul on Vaclav Cerny with the game level, and Ridvan Yilmaz’s miss from the spot compounded the miseries of the Ibrox faithful.

The Light Blues will have another crack at Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on 2 January, and Clement surely needs to win to convince fans that he’s the right man for the job in Glasgow.

While the Belgian manager has drowned out the noise around his future for the time being, things could change quickly if the Bears struggle to maintain their displays.
