Rangers v Celtic: Scottish Government could intervene today amid latest footage

Rangers and Celtic can expect to hear from the Scottish Government as early as Monday following the violent scenes that marred the Scottish League Cup final, according to Keith Hackett.

Footage of fans being chased through the streets of Glasgow were widely shared on social media ahead of Sunday’s (15 December) clash at Hampden Park, which ended in a penalty-shootout loss for the Gers.

The Scottish Sun [15 December] shared images of various skirmishes – which were widely condemned – while others posted videos on X on Monday (16 December).

Former FIFA official Hackett fully expects the Scottish Government to intervene, and reckons they could do so in the next 24 hours or so.

“The Scottish Government will look in very carefully and will today or tomorrow call a meeting between the two clubs,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

So much planning goes into these games from both clubs, with officials tasked with supporter safety. The Scottish FA’s headquarters is Hampden and falls under their jurisdiction.

There’ll be a lot of footage and it’ll be interesting to see how the Scottish Government act. It’s not good for football.”

Rangers and Celtic could be heavily punished

It goes without saying that the scenes prior to the cup final were shameful. Rivalry is everything in this sport, but it cannot cross the line – and on this occasion it did.

Exactly what action the Scottish Government will take, if any, remains to be seen.

If nothing else, it has cast a negative cloud on what was a truly incredible contest at Hampden Park, albeit one that ended in disappointment for Philippe Clement and his players.

And the bad news is there could be further sanctions to come from the SFA over something that happened inside the stadium.

In other Rangers news, a first-team player has been ruled out for several weeks.
