Rangers and Celtic could be set for UEFA-like sanctions, politicians may step in
Rangers and Celtic could face UEFA-like sanctions if the problem with ultras groups persists, Tom English says.
Both sets of supporters were caught on camera clashing in Glasgow before the Premier Sports Cup final on 15 December at Hampden Park as the Gers lost 5-4 in the penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw.
English argues that statements from the respective clubs and the Scottish FA after such violence aren’t enough to solve the issue and suspects politicians may also get involved in finding a solution.
The BBC Scotland journalist wrote on his X account [16 December]: “Plaintive cries via club/SPFL/SFA statements aren’t cutting it with the comedy hard men in these ultras groups. The problems are getting worse.
“Either the football authorities display intent with UEFA-like sanctions, or the politicians are going to get involved again.”
Rangers supporters take hope from Celtic defeat in Premier Sports Cup final
While the scenes before the fixture were unfortunate, the Light Blues’ fans were fully behind their team as they got the better of Celtic in the first half.
Brendan Rodgers’ team did manage to make a comeback after the break, but the Gers’ resilience was on show, equalising twice in the second half.
Penalty shootouts are a lottery, and in the end, Kasper Schmeichel saved the only missed penalty in 10 attempts between the two.
Jack Butland was one of the surprise takers for Rangers and slotted the ball beautifully in the back of the net to give some last-gasp hope, but the drama may not be done there.
The behaviour of fans has been a massive talking point in Glasgow over the years, with even the use of pyrotechnics inside Hampden leading to potential trouble.
While being sanctioned for the fans’ behaviour wouldn’t be the best of outcomes for the Gers, it remains to be seen whether the authorities in Scottish football will take action.
