Kasper Schmeichel should be charged after Rangers v Celtic penalty shootout
Celtic star Kasper Schmeichel should be charged after entering the Rangers box during the penalty shoot-out of the League Cup Final, according to The Ref’s View.
Run by former SFA referees Des Roache and Steve Conroy, The Ref’s View posted on X (16 December) in response to a video showing Schmeichel walking into the area as Arne Engels took Celtic’s third penalty.
Schmeichel pointing and then encroaching the box didn’t seem to affect Jack Butland as Engels slotted into the bottom corner, but official rules imply that the Dane will be charged after Celtic’s victory, winning 5-4 on penalties after the 3-3 draw.
A list of the SFA’s penalty shoot-out rules was shared, stating: “The goalkeeper must remain on the field of play, outside the penalty area, on the goal line where it meets the penalty boundary area.”
Kasper Schmeichel should be banned after controversy v Rangers
Penalties and controversy have gone hand-in-hand in the fallout of the shoot-out defeat, with the Gers also being denied a clear spot-kick with the game locked at 3-3 in extra time.
The Gers players’ lack of protest at that decision – as Liam Scales dragged Vaclav Cerny back on the edge of the box – shocked many, and the same seemingly applies here.
Replays clearly didn’t pick up Schmeichel encroaching on Butland’s box as Engels stepped up from 12 yards, and unfortunately for the Gers’ chances in the shootout overall, neither did their goalkeeper.
Had Butland noticed Schmeichel being inside his area either during or after the Celtic midfielder stepped up, a retaking of the Belgian’s penalty may well have been in order per the rules.
The keeper possibly being charged days after the defeat will mean nothing to Rangers though, who must get back on the horse immediately at Ibrox.
