James Tavernier twist emerges for Rangers v Celtic

James Tavernier has not been seen with his Rangers teammates ahead of the Celtic clash, according to David Tanner.

The talkSPORT presenter took to X on 15 December to state that the club captain did not join the Gers players to take an early look at the pitch at Hampden Park.

Philippe Clement is looking for his second piece of silverware as manager of the Ibrox outfit in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday.

Tanner wrote: “Rangers are first to arrive at Hampden for the League Cup Final. James Tavernier hasn’t joined the players for this early look at the (very wet) pitch.”

James Tavernier may not start for Rangers against Celtic

While it’s not confirmed yet, had Tavernier been starting, he would’ve led his teammates out and would’ve been among the most vocal of the lot.

The fact that he’s not there raises questions and this could mean that Clement has decided to go with Dujon Sterling at right-back.

Tavernier did have a good few games recently but has historically struggled to keep up with Daizen Maeda in Old Firms.

This certainly will have been considered by Clement if he is to drop his captain who has been criticised for his defensive lapses.

Hopefully, Gers can provide the upset and kickstart their campaign which has started slowly.

There is certainly going to be plenty of drama and it may be a game that can make or break Clement’s time at the club.
