Rangers to make three changes for Scottish League Cup final v Celtic

Barry Ferguson sees Rangers making at least three changes for the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic on Sunday.

Despite the impressive performance in the 1-1 draw against Tottenham, Ferguson sees Dujon Sterling, Danilo and Ianis Hagi coming into the fold for Philippe Clement’s side.

He has also backed his former side to pick up a 2-1 victory in extra time in the Old Firm derby at Hampden Park on 15 December.

Ferguson told the Daily Record [14 December]: “James Tavernier represents an obvious dilemma because the skipper is looking back to his best and he came up with another assist the other night for Igamane’s opener. But, as much as he offers going forward, it does feel like this might be the time for Clement to try something different in terms of limiting the damage Daizen Maeda does to Rangers down that right hand side.

“For that reason, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dujon Sterling get the nod at right back because, physically, he might give Maeda something different to think about.

“Yes, that would take something away from the attacking side of the team but with Hagi, Danilo and Igamane up the other end of the pitch Rangers should still be able to impose themselves upon Celtic and give them plenty to worry about at the back.”

Danilo and Hagi are not registered for the current stage of the Europa League, meaning they were unable to play in the match against Tottenham on Thursday.

This absence leaves them fresh and available for the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic.

Both players have demonstrated significant game-changing capabilities, given Hagi’s creativity and vision from attacking midfield and Danilo with his goal-scoring prowess and dynamic forward play.

Their inclusion in the starting eleven would provide Gers with a tactical edge and fresh legs for the crucial match.

Meanwhile, Sterling’s potential start at right-back over James Tavernier would bring a different dynamic to the defence.

The 25-year-old’s physicality could offer more defensive solidity, particularly against Daizen Maeda, potentially neutralising one of Celtic’s key attacking threats, although it might slightly reduce their offensive output from that position.
