Rangers v Tottenham footage described as ‘Outrageous’ after what happened last night

Rangers so nearly stole in to secure a famous European win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night but for an “outrageous” save, according to Graeme Young.

The Daily Record journalist [12 December] described the action in a lively encounter from Ibrox which ended in a share of the spoils, as Dejan Kulusevski cancelled out Hamza Igamane’s opener.

Cyriel Dessers was the man denied by former Celtic stopper Fraser Forster after creating himself an opportunity inside the Spurs box, shortly prior to having the ball in the net but being immediately thwarted by the assistant referee.

“An outrageous save denied Cyriel Dessers before the Nigeria international was denied a likely winner by the offside flag,” Young described, as Forster denied his one-v-one attempt after the substitute had beaten two defenders to find himself in on goal.

A little over a minute later, Dessers did find the net – but was one of a trio of Rangers men to have strayed well offside as Tottenham effectively executed their high line.

Rangers heap pressure on Ange Postecoglou

Had Rangers won at Ibrox on Thursday – which for large spells looked as if it would be the case – Postecoglou could have been having an interesting meeting with the Tottenham board on Friday morning.

As it turned out, Kulusevski may well have saved the ex-Celtic boss in North London to fight another day, with a must-win Premier League contest against bottom side Southampton approaching this weekend.

As for the Light Blues, Philippe Clement was not shy about his views on believing they should have taken all three points, instead of taking a point apiece which keeps both sides together on 11 points from six Europa League matches.

An anticipated raucous atmosphere at Ibrox inspired the team in considerable periods to demonstrate what Clement described on TNT Sports [12 December] as an “advert for Scottish football”, showing they can mix it with some of the strongest sides.

The quick turnaround to the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic at Hampden [15 December] means there is little time to pick the bones out of anything, as retaining the trophy could be the true catalyst to a massive lift for the season.
