Rangers ‘inferiority complex’ verdict shared ahead of Tottenham and Celtic games

Alasdair Lamont believes Rangers need to cast aside any thoughts of an “inferiority complex” ahead of their upcoming games against Celtic and Tottenham.

The Gers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and are set to face one of their toughest challenges of the season in their Europa League clash against Tottenham on Thursday.

Then once that game is out the way, they’ll have to start preparing for the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic on Sunday.

Writing for the BBC Sport website (11 December), journalist Lamont shared his thoughts on the Gers’ upcoming week of fixtures.

“Rangers approach the twin challenges of Tottenham and Celtic in much-improved fettle after a four-game winning run in which performances have got better, goals have begun to flow and their defence has been breached just once,” he wrote.

“Having commentated on the 6-0 victory over Kilmarnock, it was fascinating to watch the players’ confidence increase by the goal.

“Rangers have not won a derby of note since the Scottish Cup semi-final of 2022, this one-off game represents an opportunity to reassert themselves in this fixture and for Clement to show he is able to make his squad more than the sum of their parts.

“Two heavy defeats are not an outlandish prospect for Rangers in the coming days yet neither are two positive outcomes and some silverware to boot.

“For that to happen, Rangers must play with that aforementioned confidence, casting aside any inferiority complex to show that, despite a gulf in resources, they can still be a force to be reckoned with.”

Rangers and Philippe Clement could cause a double upset by the end of the week

This season has been a bit like a rollercoaster for Rangers with the club performing admirably in the Europa League and Scottish League Cup but then falling flat in the league.

Clement’s men are third in the table, which is far below the standards expected of them. They can overtake Aberdeen by winning their game in hand but the gap to Celtic already looks insurmountable.

Many thought they’d be able to put up a decent title challenge this season but instead it’s been a struggle to even keep pace with second until the recent upturn in form.

Additionally, there have already been countless times this season when the future of the Belgian at Ibrox has been questioned but he’s always managed to pull something out of the bag and claw his way back into the good books of the board.

Only time will tell what the future has in store for the Ibrox outfit and Clement but at the moment, there’s plenty of positivity emerging from the Rangers camp.
