Kris Boyd shares Rangers shock verdict ahead of Celtic cup final

Kris Boyd accepts seeing Rangers defeat Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday would be a “shock”.

The Gers will be wary of Celtic heading into the cup final clash on 15 December given that the 3-0 defeat in the last Old Firm Derby derailed their Scottish Premiership prospects completely.

Boyd shared live on Sky Sports News [11 December, 10:24am] that the current gap between the two sides in Glasgow means it would be a big surprise if Rangers can clinch a victory at Hampden Park.

He said: “I wouldn’t get too carried away by the past week’s performances. I’ve got to say, if Rangers win the cup on Sunday it’d be a shock and it shouldn’t be like that.

“Rangers should be going there and it should be an even game under normal circumstances. But it’d be an upset and shock if they win. That’s how far Celtic are away from Rangers right now.

“At the same time, you never know what’s going to happen. It’ll relieve the pressure if they win, but if they don’t it’ll only increase it ahead of the CEO starting on Monday.”

Rangers are underdogs heading into the Scottish League Cup final

The result of the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic will undoubtedly define Clement’s year at the Light Blues.

Rangers are 11 points adrift of their Glaswegian rivals in the SPFL, with all hopes of league success this year non-existent.

However, lifting the Scottish League Cup would catalyse the Gers to revive their poor domestic season at Ibrox and would be a certified step in the right direction for Clement.

Rangers could head into the clash on Sunday in superb form – there is the small matter of facing Tottenham in the Europa League on Thursday [12 December], and former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is under increased pressure heading into his Glasgow return.

Should Clement claim the scalp of a Celtic hero, his side will have all the confidence in the world to overcome the SPFL leaders at Hampden Park, but defeats in both fixtures could spell the end of his tenure.

The Gers appointed Patrick Stewart as chief executive officer on 24 November [Rangers Review], and the newly-instilled CEO will closely watch the upcoming fixtures with the supporters yearning to see the tide turn in Glasgow.

This will be a pivotal week for Clement’s future.
