James Tavernier replacement found by Rangers as Ibrox exit nears

Rangers look to have stepped up their efforts in offloading James Tavernier after setting their sights on a new right-back.

Tavernier has been a mainstay at Ibrox throughout his time at Rangers, although the feeling is he will leave the club before next season.

A report from Rangers News (11 December) stated that the Gers are tracking Falkirk’s Keelan Adams, who was actually released by the club as a teen.

The links suggest that the Gers are planning for their own long-term future ahead of an anticipated exit for Tavernier.

James Tavernier exit now looks inevitable at Rangers

There is no doubt that Tavernier has been an excellent servant for the club throughout many, many years at Ibrox, but the right-back is arguably well past his best now and it is in the best interests of the club to begin future-proofing the squad.

Adams would provide that having impressed for Falkirk and, at just 23 years old, he has several years ahead of him – many of which will be seen as an opportunity to heighten his development.

Tavernier has been in and out of the side under Philippe Clement, with Dujon Sterling often preferred, and calls have been made for that to be the case when the Gers face Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final.

Adams isn’t the only target to have been identified as a replacement for Tavernier, with Wrexham’s Ryan Barnett also linked with Rangers in recent weeks.

January may provide the opportunity to find that successor ahead of an almost inevitable summer exit for the 33-year-old.

In other Rangers news, supporters will likely rage at an exit claim made by Todd Cantwell.
