Philippe Clement could be in serious trouble at Rangers within days

Rangers suffering a “savage” defeat to Tottenham could leave Philippe Clement in “serious trouble” ahead of the League Cup Final, according to Keith Jackson.

Writing in the Daily Record’s print edition (9 December, page 36), Jackson suggested that back-to-back losses to Tottenham and Celtic in the coming days could be “catastrophic” for Clement’s future at Ibrox.

The Light Blues host Spurs in Govan on 12 December ahead of Sunday’s League Cup Final against their arch-rivals at Hampden Park, with Clement still yet to win an Old Firm game after five attempts so far.

Jackson wrote: “If he is on the wrong end of something savage from Postecoglou – and let’s not forget Tottenham went to the Etihad a couple of weeks ago and romped to a 4-0 win over Manchester City.

“Clement will be in serious trouble even before he comes face to face with Rodgers in Mount Florida on Sunday afternoon.”

Philippe Clement faces most important week of his Rangers career

Clement comes into arguably the biggest two games of his Ibrox tenure so far with his side in red-hot form for the first time this season – winning their last four games by an overall scoreline of 14-1.

The last three of those matches in particular have shown the clearest signs yet that the Bears are finally hitting their straps, defeating Nice 4-1, Kilmarnock 6-0, and Ross County 3-0 in Dingwall last time out.

Producing such sizeable victories on the continent and at home should give Clement’s side the confidence they need ahead of two crunch fixtures – but both will be much, much sterner tests.

A 6-0 win over Ross County earlier in the season came directly before their last Old Firm clash, in which the Gers surrendered feebly in a 3-0 loss, and with Spurs to come first up, the challenge is even greater.

Minus Ianis Hagi and Danilo in Europe, Clement may be advised to take a must-not-lose approach on Thursday, with the League Cup Final set to be a potentially defining game for him in his bid to finally get one over on Celtic.
