Philippe Clement game over mooted at Rangers as Van Bronckhorst comparison made

Peter Grant believes Rangers will not hesitate to sack Philippe Clement after what they did to Giovanni van Bronckhorst two years ago.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show [7 December], the pundit said that the two games against Celtic on 15 December and 2 January will determine Clement’s future at Ibrox.

The former Celtic midfielder suggested that the Light Blues treated Van Bronckhorst poorly despite him doing well and feels the board will have no qualms about firing Clement as well if the fans started calling them out.

“Once they [the fans] start to go at the board, it’s game over. Maybe, that would make them flex their muscles”, Grant said.

“I’m hoping I’m wrong in respect to that because you never want managers to lose their job.

“I was a big supporter of Van Bronckhorst. I thought he was very good with the press, I thought he was very good for Rangers, I thought he handled himself really well, and then we know the way he was treated.

“So, if he can be treated that way, there is absolutely no doubt they’ll make the call on Philippe Clement.”

Van Bronckhorst was in charge of the Gers for a year, averaging 2.01 points in the 68 games he was in charge of. However, he was sacked on 21 November 24 on the back of an underwhelming run that brought only two wins in seven games across all competitions.

The Dutch tactician, though, led the Light Blues to the UEFA Europa League final in his first season, although they ultimately lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt at the final hurdle.

Clement, meanwhile, finds himself in a difficult spot as Rangers sit 14 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, albeit with a game in hand.

There have been shouts for the Belgian to be sacked, but the Glasgow giants have been reluctant to do so in the absence of a chairman and a CEO [Ludo Vandewalle].

With Patrick Stewart already announced as the club’s new CEO and the announcement of a chairman expected shortly, the 50-year-old could be running out of time at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are legally bound to silence as a decision on one of their star players is due soon.
