Rangers chiefs ripped apart over nonsense Todd Cantwell transfer reveal

Keith Jackson has branded the six-figure deal that Rangers sold Todd Cantwell to Blackburn Rovers for as “nonsense”.

The Daily Record journalist isn’t happy with the Gers’ hierarchy for selling the midfielder for what he considers “buttons”.

Speaking on Hotline Live [5 December], journalist Jackson said: “It doesn’t ring true for me. Todd Cantwell, market value £600,000. It’s just nonsense.

“I don’t know how comfortable Rangers fans or shareholders should be right now listening to this and listening to people trying to apportion blame.

“You guys are sitting around the negotiation table. You let these guys go for buttons. In fact, you actually paid them to go.”

James Taylor confirmed during the Annual General Meeting that the Light Blues made just £810,000 from the sale of five players in the previous transfer window [Andy McKellar, 5 December].

Todd Cantwell fee embarrassing for Rangers

Cantwell was one of the most sought-after prospects during his initial spell at Norwich City, although the Englishman was unable to fulfil his potential at the Canaries.

The Bears signed the 26-year-old in January 2023, and he immediately became a key figure at Ibrox, scoring and assisting crucial goals.

Philippe Clement relied on Cantwell after replacing Michael Beale in the previous campaign, and the playmaker started for the Gers as they beat Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup final last season.

Cantwell ultimately failed to live up to the early hype, though, and while an exit seemed inevitable with Philippe Clement in charge, it is surprising Rangers let such an influential player join Blackburn in the summer for peanuts.

The Light Blues made several reinforcements to their squad in the previous transfer window, signing the likes of Connor Barron, Nedim Bajrami and Mohamed Diomande to bolster the midfield.

Clement has unfortunately been unable to get the best out of the squad at his disposal, with the Bears sitting 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

While Cantwell’s departure was disappointing for the Ibrox faithful, Ianis Hagi’s resurgence in recent weeks will give them hope.

The Gers’ chiefs still have questions to answer, though, regarding the Englishman’s transfer.
