Rangers weeks away from new hire as reveal emerges from AGM

Chris Jack reckons Rangers are weeks away from appointing a new chairman, but it will not be Malcolm Offord.

Speaking at the AGM on Thursday [5] December, John Gilligan revealed that the Gers will announce the successor to John Bennett “shortly” [Chris Jack].

This has led some fans to wonder if Malcolm Offord could still be in the running for the role after being ruled out earlier this week, but the journalist is convinced that it will be a different candidate altogether.

“It is highly unlikely now that Malcolm Offord will be the Rangers chairman”, he said on The Rangers Review YouTube channel [5 December].

“Rangers have moved away from that possibility, so we do expect it to be another candidate.

“Who that candidate is, we’re endeavouring to find out, so we’ll do our best to try and bring that news to you first.

“But when John [Gilligan] says shortly, I think you can expect it. It’s not going to months and months down the line, so you can see it’s going to be weeks rather than months for that chairman to be appointed.”

Rangers keep chairman reveal under wraps after AGM update

The Scottish Sun reported on 23 November that Offord has emerged as the “leading contender” to replace Bennett as the Light Blues’ permanent chairman. He was reportedly ready to take office at Ibrox and even had a say in the appointment of the new CEO.

Rangers, though, have turned their attention away from Offord and it now remains to be seen who the new chairman will be.

Patrick Stewart, who has already been announced as the CEO, will take office on 16 December, a day after the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic at Hampden.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that the Gers also have a chairman in place by that date.

Nevertheless, fans will be hoping that there is an announcement before the January transfer window opens as Philippe Clement and co look to get their domestic season back on track.

One can only hope that the 6-0 win against Kilmarnock on the Premiership on Wednesday [4 December] is a step in the right direction.

In other Rangers news, another thing Gilligan said at the AGM was received with a “huge applause” from those present at the Clyde Auditorium.
