Rangers hit by ‘Catastrophic’ betrayal that cost millions at Ibrox

Keith Jackson has sympathised with John Bennett after he was forced to deal with the “catastrophic” mess left by James Bisgrove which cost Rangers millions of pounds.

Bisgrove forefronted the renovation project of the Copland Road Stand at Ibrox, described as “botched” by Jackson.

The former’s untimely exit left carnage behind at Ibrox where Bennett was made to pick up the mess after his departure, including the move to Hampden Park.

Bennett was forced into throwing additional millions of pounds into that move and to complete the project with Jackson labelling it as “catastrophic.”

As quoted in the Daily Record (3 December), he said: “Just when Bennett was beginning to make real progress, he was blindsided quite spectacularly by the actions of James Bisgrove – a CEO in whom he had placed his complete and unstinting trust.

“Bennett was left to front up the carnage left behind (after Bisgrove’s departure), knowing his own reputation as a leader had also been trashed beyond repair. In truth, he was guilty of being a bad judge of character but the enormous price he has paid for it has been profoundly unfair.

“The catastrophic cost of this betrayal also obliterated the books, with Bennett forced to hire Hampden for millions of pounds and throw even more cash at getting the building project completed.”

Rangers are a mess on and off the pitch

Perhaps rightfully so, most of the attention will be on the on-field performances of the Gers which quite simply, have been horrid under Philippe Clement.

Celtic have an 11-point lead over Rangers having played just 13 games, epitomising the failure that has been pursued at Ibrox since the appointment of the Belgian.

A claim made by Gary Keown in November described the club as a “basket case” and the latest developments just add further evidence to that.

Finances have already been misused in Glasgow with failed transfers taking up the majority of the blame for that but the departure of Bisgrove during the renovation project ended up costing the Gers even more unnecessary money.

Things simply need to change at Ibrox both on and off the pitch if the club are to avoid regressing even further than they already have since the departure of Steven Gerrard in 2021.

Having failed to win a league title since then, every poor decision is going to be scrutinised even further and progress is going to remain at a standstill.
