Sutton reacts to Boyd question after Rangers issue he spotted v St Johnstone

Chris Sutton believes Philippe Clement should have brought Cyriel Dessers on for Rangers at half-time in their Scottish Premiership game against St. Johnstone on Sunday.

The two sides faced one another in the Scottish Premiership on 1 December and had a fairly end-to-end game with both teams getting a decent amount of chances throughout.

The game ended 1-0 in Rangers’ favour and while speaking live on Sky Sports Football (1 December, 12:56pm) during the half-time break, Sutton shared his thoughts on the performance on the first-half performance of the Gers.

“I think we have to give St. Johnstone credit, I think we all expected Rangers to really bring momentum into this game,” he said.

“It’s in that final third, I always think that something is going to happen off of [Vaclav] Cerny and it seems to be Cerny or bust in many aspects but there just isn’t the combination play.

“That’s the issue when you chop and change centre-forwards, I know he’s driving to find the best one but that’s the issue and that’s why it’s not happening in the final third.”

Sutton was then asked by Kris Boyd who he’d start as the Gers’ number nine to which he replied: “I would play [Cyriel] Dessers, I’d get Dessers on.”

Rangers need to replicate their Europa League form in the Scottish Premiership

Many fans and pundits alike anticipated Rangers to wipe the floor with St. Johnstone on Sunday after their midweek performance, where they beat Nice 4-1 in the Europa League.

They did manage to leave McDiarmid Park with all three points to their name but there’s still a lot more that could come from the team.

However, because the Gers are currently third in the league and are miles away from getting to the top spot, Clement has been under some major scrutiny.

Indeed, the Gers have just hired Patrick Stewart as their new CEO and even though that shows some signs of stability finally making their way into the club, his arrival alone won’t change the fortunes of the team.

He can provide the team with a vision and help guide them to work towards a certain vision, but unless Rangers’ players can pull their fingers out and replicate the form they usually show in their midweek European endeavours, Clement might as well kiss his title hopes goodbye.
