Clement needs private talks with Sterling as Rangers star posts ill-thought outburst

Rangers manager Philippe Clement must have stern talks with Dujon Sterling after his ill-advised post on social media left him vulnerable to punishment from UEFA.

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has warned that the 25-year-old could face a three-match ban as a result of his comments.

The right-back took exception to the referee’s decision to award the French team a penalty in the sixth minute after checking three different incidents at the VAR monitor.

The former Chelsea man posted on social media website X after the 4-1 Europa League winner over Nice, saying: “Good European performance from the boys, great atmosphere from fans, btw [by the way] anyone know why the ref was desperate to give them a pen.”

Social media controversy shows the immaturity of Rangers star

The comments of social media show an immaturity from Sterling, who should be aware the competition’s governing body can dish out punishment for such acts.

Calling into question the match officials in such a public sphere is not a clever move given the potential implications.

He could miss the remainder of the Gers league stage matches against Tottenham, Manchester United and Union Saint-Gilloise if UEFA decide to punish him.

The 25-year-old had been given a starting berth over veteran James Tavernier and was mooted for another against St.Johnstone this weekend in the Scottish Premiership. (1 December) after notching an assist last night.

However, his immature actions post-match will leave Clement with doubts about rewarding that behaviour by handing him a start on Sunday.

He must now hope that his actions do not have consequences, but Clement should still have words with the player regardless.
