Kris Boyd in hysterics on Sky Sports at incredible Nice v Rangers moment

Kris Boyd couldn’t contain his laughter after the “incredible” penalty incident during Rangers’ 4-1 win against Nice on Thursday.

The Gers produced a jaw-dropping performance at the Allianz Riviera as Vaclav Cerny, Mohammed Diomande and a Hamza Igamane brace blew the hosts away in the Europa League despite Badredine Bouanani’s late consolation goal.

However, Nice were awarded a spot-kick in the opening stages of the clash as Robin Propper had been deemed to have handled the ball in the penalty area.

Boyd was hysterical when describing the scenes in France live on Sky Sports [28 November, 8:09pm], as the VAR officials showed referee Ricardo de Burgos a handball by Dujon Sterling and a foul by Connor Barron as well as the Propper handball.

He said: “I haven’t a clue what’s going on here. It’s incredible.

“We’ve had three penalty incidents in one. I’ve sympathy for referees and officials now – this is incredible.”

Philippe Clement lays down a statement at Rangers

The Belgian raised eyebrows with his team selection heading into the clash as Cyriel Dessers was left out of the starting lineup – what a wild assessment of the situation that turned out to be.

Furthermore, Igamane was deemed not old enough to lead the line at Ibrox, and the Moroccan emphatically silenced all critics by single-handedly dismantling Nice with two goals and one assist on the night.

However, no one in Glasgow will benefit more from this result than Clement, as he has been under growing pressure in recent weeks.

While this may remain the case, he has done his chances no harm with a comprehensive victory in Europe.

The “three penalty incidents in one” debacle in the opening stages could have significantly altered the result of the clash and almost appeared as if the officials wanted to find a reason to award Nice a penalty.

Regardless, this incident was so far away from the supporters’ minds come the final whistle, and the Light Blues are now in a phenomenal position to qualify for the knockout stages despite the daunting fixtures ahead against Tottenham and Manchester United.

Thursday evening was everything the Rangers faithful had been waiting for this season, and while the damage has already been done in the Scottish Premiership, there is now nothing but hope that the Glaswegian outfit can embark on a successful Europa League campaign.
