Cyriel Dessers in serious trouble after Rangers transfer news on Tuesday
Cyriel Dessers looks to be in serious trouble at Ibrox as Rangers eye a move for Joe Gelhardt.
Dessers is Rangers’ top scorer this season.
However, that is a statistic that flatters the 29-year-old after his performances this term. While he might lead the way in terms of scoring at Ibrox, he has still only managed to find the back of the net four times in 12 Scottish Premiership outings, and once in four UEFA Europa League matches.
As a result, Dessers has come under heavy criticism, with suggestions that Rangers won’t win a Scottish Premiership title with the Nigeria international as their number-one striker.
Therefore, it looks as though Philippe Clement is ready to act and bring in a new centre-forward, as pressure mounts on the Rangers chief.
As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post [26 November], Clement’s side have expressed a desire to sign Leeds United forward Gelhardt on loan.
Philippe Clement to replace Cyriel Dessers with Joe Gelhardt at Rangers?
Signing Gelhardt won’t be an easy task for the Gers.
Several clubs from the Championship and Belgium are thought to be interested in signing the 22-year-old, who previously saw a move to Celtic collapse.
In addition, there is no guarantee that Clement would even be the man to welcome the young forward to the club in January, while the Gers’ slim hopes of lifting the Scottish title this season also make a mid-season move to Ibrox a difficult sell.
However, if Rangers could somehow overcome those obstacles and win the race for Gelhardt’s signature, it could be exactly what is needed. Dessers continues to start regularly, despite the amount of chances he has missed this season, with Clement lacking another quality option up top.
Finding a replacement for the striker has been thought to be difficult due to financial restraints in Glasgow. Therefore, signing a talented young player on loan could be an amazing opportunity.
Whatever happens, this transfer news is a clear signal to Dessers that he needs to up his game.

There is still time to go until January for the centre-forward to prove that he doesn’t need replacing. However, if he continues to struggle, it looks as though the Gers are ready to act.
