Clement could be sacked in panto-style Rangers twist after Ibrox development

Michael Gannon believes it is unlikely that Rangers technical director Nils Koppen will sack Philippe Clement in a “panto style”.

The Belgian boss is coming under pressure at Ibrox and this hasn’t been helped by a 1-1 draw at home to Dundee United on Saturday (23 November).

This has led to calls for the manager to be sacked by the Gers but now feels more unlikely after his countrymate was promoted from his role as director of recruitment.

This feeling has been echoed by Gannon in his column with the Sunday Mail on 24 November (page 60) as he said: “Is Koppen going to be giving his big pal the tap on the shoulder if it all goes a bit haywire in the next few hectic weeks? Unlikely.

“That really would be the panto style with the crowd shouting out, ‘he’s behind you.’

The ex-Monaco boss is in a tough spot in Govan where nothing seems to be going right as his job remains on the line.

This was shown against The Tangerines as the Light Blues dominated large portions of the game but still failed to come away with all three points.

This sums up the issues that have plagued the Gers in recent weeks with goals being conceded and not enough being scored.

Sections of supporters have seen enough of the Belgian at Ibrox as the likes of Derek McInnes have been linked to potentially taking over.

Whatever the fans may be demanding, the future of Clement right now appears to be down to Koppen who may be reluctant to sack the manager so soon into his tenure as technical director.

There is a relationship there with them both being from Belgium but with Rangers now 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, there is no room for sentiment right now.
